A great way to celebrate Pride is to check for any local Pride parades or events in your area. Not only are these events fun to attend, but they are also a great way to show support for your community and LGBTQ + neighbors. If you are attending a parade, spend some time with your little ones before the festive events to make fun signs! Your family can exercise their creativity while creating refreshing and fun messages to promote in support of the LGBTQ + community.
Promote conversations about pride
The best conversations start at home! Take the time to talk to your family about the story of Pride and the triumphs and pain of LGBTQ + people. Whether it’s dinner or breaks between Netflix episodes, your home can be a safe, comfortable place to have simple conversations about Pride roots. There are excellent internet resources and on social media that is easy for children to understand and absorb.
Learn about proud flags
Part of the Pride family curriculum can easily include an overview of it the different types of pride flags. Once you learn about the many different Pride flags, a great way for you and your kids to support Pride – regardless of the month – is to invest in a Pride flag to display in your backyard, window or living room. This will add some color to your home and let people know that your home is a welcoming place.
Develop your home library
Kids love to pick a book (or five!) To read at bedtime. Extend the selection of the book to sleep adding some great picture books written by and for different LGBTQ + people. Adding variety to your library can encourage honest conversation, as your little ones’ weird minds take over every page. Plus, it’s a great way to slip in some extra reading practice!
